Picture: KYM SMITH Jesse Phillips AFTER 17 days Australia finally got an election result yesterday, but it was not the one Opposition Leader and Warringah MP Tony Abbott had hoped for as two of the three key independents re- turned the Gillard govern- ment to power. The decision means the Labor Party, led by Prime Minister Julia Gillard, will form the first minority fed- eral government in Australia since 1940. After Bob Katter declared his hand at 2pm, and said he would back an Abbott gov- ernment, Tony Windsor and Rob Oakeshott both an- nounced an hour later they would back Labor. That gave Labor 76 seats to the Coalition's 74, giving Prime Minister Gillard the slimmest of victories. Mr Windsor briefly outlined his reasons for his decision before announcing ''my intention with my vote, for what it's worth, is to support Labor''. He then went on to flag broadband and renewable energy policies as key issues, which, he said, Labor was better placed to deliver.
